Teams of 3-5 people will compete for points based on items on the scavenger hunt list, extra points will be awarded for group costumes and bike costumes. Bikes, bags, locks and a minimum of one digital camera per team required.

Registration starts at 7pm, DETHRIDE starts at 7:30. All DETHRIDERS must finish at 3 Kings at 9:00pm at the latest with all their items and photographs, teams must be complete to finish the ride.

DETHRIDE is $6 and includes access to the show. Tickets to the show are $7 at the door or $6 in advance.

Tuesday Night Racing: 7-11 Velodrome

An Interview with Kris Thompson of 303cycling

Hello readers: Its no secret, we haven't had much content lately. I thought an interview series would be a nice way to get back on the flow (of web traffic), so heres the first one.

A couple weeks ago I took a ride (a very messy one, still cleaning the mud out of my brake calipers) with Kris Thompson, the founder and one of the primary contributers to 303cycling. Afterwards we did a little Q&A, heres what he had to say.

1. When did you start 303cycling?

March 2008. Before that I was doing the same thing on boulderveloracing.com as a means to improve our teams exposure for our sponsors.

2. What was your motivation for creating 303cycling?
Primary reason was my lack of interest in pro cycling because of one scandel after another, I simply lost touch with those people and had a much strong interest in the cycling that was happening right in my back door. Another reason for starting 303cycling was to fill a void that was needed and that was helping spread cycling related news that happens in our community. Where did one go years ago to get this kind of information? I also started this project because mainstream media is failing, newspapers are dying and big corporations are buying up the dead and producing vanilla news or news that has no interests to me or our community of cycling. The future IMO is in targeted media outlets, not the one shoe fits all like Fox News, CNN, NYTimes, etc.

3. Road, mountain and cross racing seem to be the main focus of
303cycling. Do you not care as much about other types of cycling or is
there just not as much to write about things like BMX, advocacy,
commuting, etc.?
I care about all of it but in the end there are only so many hours in the day and the disciplines that I am involved in are the ones I have the easiest access to. I have a strong desire to have a larger non competitive cycling tone then what is there today and as a result we are constantly looking for others to help write or just ping us when something important in the cycling world happens like opening of new bike paths, local advocacy, bike polo events, etc. If anyone ever has news you feel is interesting please drop us a line at 303cycling (http://303cycling.com/contact")

4. Are there any other websites, based locally or elsewhere, that
serve the same function as 303cycling? i.e. reporting on local races,
rides, events, & general cycling news.
BikeDenver.org is close, I would love to have their content integrated into ours, would make for a good site. YourGroupRide.com is very similar to 303cycling but it covers Fort Collins area.

5. What is the future of 303cycling? Any big plans?
Short term, improve our resource pages like our climbs/rides page and our upcoming training/coaches pages. Also hope to bring on a few more writers and a part-time sales person. Long term, Site redesign, move into other related areas like triathletes and running and maybe merge with other related sites.

First off, Boulder Indoor Cycling is selling off some of its demo bikes at crazy low prices.

Classes start up again on July 5th.

And track cycling will soon be "exposed" to us civilians. One of my favorite things about living in Boulder is the huge number of professional racers and bike industry bigwigs. Hopefully this event/series isn't too expensive or boring.

I also caught a rumor about another party at the velodrome for Bama's send off to Portland in a few weeks. Stay Tuned.

I recently re-read Jobst Brandt's book the Bicycle Wheel and it inspired to me make a wheel-related post (as well as hand-build some 36 spoke wheels with Mavic MA2 Rims). So I got on my computer and made some basic wheel building tools.

If you've ever built a wheel, you know that before you can begin, you need to calculate the length of spokes to use. I wrote some MATLAB code that calculates the spoke length you need for a given rim and hub combination. If you have MATLAB, then you can paste the following text into an m-file and run it as a spoke length calculator. Otherwise, if you are a computer nerd, I think that C & C++ are similar enough to MATLAB that you could modify the code to work as such.

The program works fine if you know all the measurements, and for most rims and hubs a quick google search will get you all the necessary dimensions if the manufacturer and model of rub and rim are known. But if you can't find the information online, or don't trust the source, then you must measure the rim and hub yourself. So I made a few metrics that show how to measure hubs and rims yourself, supposing you have an accurate set of calipers or a steady hand and a good ruler.

The flange diameter is measured from the center of a spoke hole on one side of the flange to the center of the spoke holes opposite that hole. So pick a hole and measure from the center of it to is opposite. To verify you are doing this accurately you should count 8 spoke holes between the two holes for a 36 hole hub, 7 spoke holes between the two for a 32 hole hub, 6 spoke holes between the two for a 28 hole hub, ... (N/4)-1 spoke holes for an N hole hub. The flange hole diameter is kind of hard to precisely measure so it is usually safe to assume it is 2.4mm.

A dimension that is particularly hard to measure, at least for rear hubs, is the distance from the center of the hub to the center of the left and right flanges. Here is one of many ways of measuring this:
Measure the OLD (over locknut distance -- which is usually 100mm for front hubs, 120mm for rear track hubs, 126mm for old rear road bike hubs, 130mm for modern road bike rear cassette hubs, 135mm for modern mountain bike rear cassette hubs, and can be all sorts of things for tandem & other unusual hubs), then measure distance "a" and distance "b," which is the distance from the end locknut to the center of the hub flange for both left and right sides respectively. The distance WL from the center of the hub to the center of the left flange is (OLD/2)-a and the distance WR from the center of the hub to the center of the right flange is (OLD/2)-b.

Another dimension that is particularly hard to measure is the effective rim diameter. The effective rim diameter is the diameter of the inner wall of the rim where the spoke heads sit. One way of measuring this is to drop a spoke nipple in the rim and measure the distance between the top of the nipple head and the outer rim diameter. I have done this by marking a spoke stuck down the hole into the nipple head then measuring the distance "x" from the end of the spoke to the mark. Subtracting this distance "x" from the outside rim diameter will give you ERD, the effective rim diameter.

Hope these are useful to someone.

Headset Tutorial

Hey, y'all. Thought I'd try my hand at a mechanics tutorial since we haven't had much content to post lately (but hey, if you only posted original content how often would you post?). Heres the first in what may become a series -- how to overhaul a threaded, unsealed headset.

Note: I posted this on a popular online bike forum and asked for some feedback and have a couple things to add.

1. The orientation of the ball bearing cage isn't always necessarily ball-side-down, the ball side should face the bearing race, which is almost always down for the bottom race, but can be either way on the top race.

2. When tightening/adjusting the top nuts of a headset, use two wrenches, one to hold the bottom nut in the correct position, and the other to tighten the top nut.

3. Some people suggested that the amount of cleaning of the ball-bearings was overkill. Indeed, if you regularly maintain your headset, all thats really necessary is a wipe down with a clean rag and some fresh grease. This headset (like a lot of "track" headsets, which have no grime seal on the bottom) was thrashed, so it needed a lot of cleaning.

4. I wrote "biodegradeable, please" about what degreaser to use. I was informed that "bio" degreaser is no longer bio-degradeable after it has grease and grime entrained in it. So I'll take the opportunity to say this, use as little degreaser as possible and dispose of it responsibly. Degreaser should be landfilled or taken to a solvent disposal site, not dumped. Regardless of what jerks on the internet say, I still think citrus degreaser is better for the environment than a solvent like tetrachloroethene.

5. The frame (not mine) in the photos is busted, you can see damage in the paint/tubing where the headtube meets the top tube and down tube. If your bike is damaged in this area, its not too safe to be riding hard, and you should keep a close eye on the damage to make sure it doesn't get worse.\

The Mythical Thursday Night Fixed Gear Ride

A long time ago, in a land not too far from my "place" a group of youngsters used to mob up and ride bikes. Oh the times they had, evading the law, frequenting parks and hollering at people at Pearl Street on any given Thursday.

But then, tragically, they disappeared. Rides became limited at first to only a few individuals, often riding directly to do some loops, then breaking apart to go their separate ways, riding into the dark alone. The ride was falling apart.

We lost our way. With the onset of school, for most, and jobs, for all, the rides were overlooked, shoved under the rug, put on the back burners. What we need the most, the freedom, the release was left unaccounted for.

Then came the discrepancy between our riders. FGFS or not. Stunt? As groups of kids began to dabble in the newest craze, the few rides that came together became segregated by style. Stunting was no fun for Tri-Spoke enthusiasts and who was to blame them.

In the past year the Revival Premier showed just how many kids there were out there that loved to ride bikes. We shared a night of reflection on just how far we had come, and how much there still was to learn and experience.

So, I propose to you now. Begin again. Bring your bikes (whatever style), enthusiasm, and youth and come ride again as we once did. Stay updated as our rides will be posted here as they are decided upon.

Korean Keirin

The keirin race is kind of an obscure track event. Not obscure in the traditional sense, but obscure in that, until recently, it was not very common outside of Japan. In fact, it would not even be an Olympic event had the Japanese Keirin Association not bribed the UCI $3 million to have it included.

Keirin racing is strictly regulated in Japan, a lot of state revenue is made off gambling on races. Frames and parts must be approved by NJS, a governing body which sets standards for equipment so that no rider has an unfair equipment advantage over another. When someone mentions keirin, I think of Japan and NJS bikes & parts because used keirin frames are popular here in the US.

To my surprise, I recently learned of a similar keirin racing organization in South Korea when I stumbled across a blogspot selling used Korean keirin frames. I'd seen these frames on eBay occasionaly in the past but didn't think much of them, just thought they were plain Korean track frames.

The blogspot has some sweet frames, but its hard to tell what exactly they are. This Corex for example is made of Columbus Keirin tubing and built with Nagasawa parts.

But its not really clear if they're made by Nagasawa, or if they're made by someone else building with Nagasawa parts, does Nagasawa even sell their frame parts?

This Cello Kalavinka looks pretty sweet.

This particular one has been repainted and had Kalavinka decals applied. You wouldn't know the difference if they didn't say it was a Cello. Is it a Cello or is it a Kalavinka? Does anyone know?

Even more confusing: Cello 3Rensho Now I really don't get it.

Velospace should not be confused with FixedGearGallery or Crappy old 10 speed gallery. The difference between them is somewhat significant and usually boils down to build quality.

Looks like the Longmont Museum (yes, Longmont...) is having an exhibition of bikes through the years. The museum site doesn't say much, but we have some pamphlets at University Bikes and its looks like it could be pretty neat.

The show is up from April 24th to July 3rd, and they have a couple free days listed, otherwise the cost is $5. Check it out if you're in the area and want to see some classic bikes.

I was browsing the website for the popular mail order bike shop Excel Sports earlier today and happened across this $129 chain.

This is the new Dura-Ace: Yumeya

Presumably Yumeya is Shimano's Marketing Department's answer to the re-introduced Campagnolo Super Record, but this is ridiculous, $130 for a chain? Even the new Record 11 speed chains retail for $90 (though they require a $200 tool to install). The thing that appeals most to roadies is "grams," this chain weighs 261 grams. High tech? The chain on my 30 year old Colnago weighs in at a modest 240 grams.

And if just a chain doesn't satisfy your compulsive upgrading, the Shimano Dura Ace Yumeya 7900 5-piece Kit surely will

At first I thought maybe Excel misplaced a decimal but they're for real. $549.95 for 30g weight savings and some gold bolts.

I thought upgrading bikes with TI bolts was a 90's thing, but I can't be sure since I didn't cycle in the 90's. What I do know is that TI bolt superstore SRP sells a $150 TI/Al bolt kit that reportedly lightens your bike by up to 150 grams.

I wonder if Shimano Yumeya will go the way of Ultegra SL.

Summary: Boulder Police were concerned that Community Cycles was sending bikes that the Police impound had donated off to Africa so they halted donations. Community Cycles response was to take the "Bikes to Africa" page off their website, release a statement saying they don't send them out anymore and are working on a formal deal to re-start the flow of donated bikes.

Longmont cyclist sues dog owner whose pet ran into his wheel

Summary: A dog ran into a guys bike and caused him some serious injuries and grief. The dog was is King Charles Spaniel, a breed known to chase moving things. The article suggests the dog is still alive so I doubt it could have cause too much trouble. Well, just as fast as that dog chased his bike, a lawyer chased Mr. Abbhul's ambulance and he is now suing the dog owner for negligence (not having an effective latch on the gate). I don't know who to side with here; I don't particularly like small dogs or crashing my bike, but something tells me that the "latch" defense isn't going to win this one.
I hope Mr. Abbhul gets well and back on his bike again soon, I hope that the dog's owner will install a functioning latch on her gate, and I hope that nobody gets too embarrassed in the shitshow that will surely surround this ridiculous lawsuit.

Don't take this story too lightly. A bike-dog collision took Marcus Burghardt out of the 2007 Tour de France. But Sandy Casar hit a dog later in the same Tour and went on the win the stage.

Also, since all of these are Daily Camera articles involving bikes, there are hundred of ridiculous comments.
Be sure to read them and laugh, but be sure NEVER post one unless you want to be accused of being a hippy/nazi/elitist/ignorant/homophobic/dog loving/dog hating/asshole biker/Republican NRA member.

Kind of looking forward to these guys. These shoes are loosely inspired by the design of old cycling shoes, low profile, narrow laces etc but with a rubber sole instead of a hard leather/plastic one. The colors of the shoes correspond to the colors of the classification jerseys in the Giro D'Italia. Unfortunately for fans of the Giro, which starts on May 8th this year, these don't come out until July and besides the design inspiration, nothing about these makes them particularly suitable for cycling.

Futura x Descente Packable Jacket

These are FUTURA branded Descente cycling jackets that pack into a small pouch. I thought this was worth mention because Descente is based out of Boulder (though theres no factory store where you can get these) and because we've seen FUTURA collaborate with the bike industry before; the one that sticks out most in my mind is the FUTURA x Colnago Master.

But with a $400 pricetag, I don't think I'll be picking up a new Descente jacket any time soon.

Story #1: Boulder transportation official: Cyclists should have to dismount at crosswalks

Summary: If you live in Boulder, you probably know that you can cross a street in a crosswalk as long as you are going the pace of a pedestrian. Recently, Boulder Transportation Officials have been discussing changing the "bicycle in crosswalks" law to make cyclists dismount their bikes at a crosswalk. Some people think this is a good thing, some think this is a bad thing. The Daily Camera Online already has about 250 comments on the subject so be sure to read the full story and throw in your opinion if you feel like it.

My thoughts: Probably a good thing, at least in some parts of town. 16th and Broadway is a shitshow of pedestrians, RTD buses, cars, longboarders, and cyclists from 3-6 every day and maybe making everyone dismount their bike would clear up some of the pandemonium.
Also, as far as the pedestrian crossings along Broadway and along Canyon, making someone walk across them rather than letting them ride could prevent more inattentive drivers from hitting people and/or other drivers. I know at least one person who has inadvertently caused an accident by biking across a pedestrian crossing on Broadway.

BUTTTTTTTTTT If the city is going to wage war on cyclists they must also wage war on the real menace, longboarders.

Story #2: Tony Kornheiser vs. Lance Amstrong

Yesterday some nobody-sportscaster made comments on his radio show encouraging motorists to run cyclists of the road. You can listen to audio of his show on this YouTube video. Its basically a conversation between a few bike hating idiots talking nonsense about the cars superiority over the bike. Well, lucky for us cyclists, celebrity Lance Armstrong used his massive twitter following to turn millions of cyclists against this guy.

Lance went on this guys show and made him apologize etc and the world is all better now.
That YouTube video also has hundreds of comments so if you feel angry or whatever about the situation go share your thoughts with the YouTube masses.

A Cinetica frame popped up on eBay

Hello. Here is one of the rarest racing frames ever produced. The Cinetica "Giotto". This is a true carbon fiber monocoque built racing frame. Hand made in Italy with the expertise and cooperation of 3 world class companies:

Ferarri

This is the frame that started it all. The Italians had carbon fiber perfected way before any other company, so...here is the frame history:

In the 1980's Andrea Cinelli who hails from the Cinelli name decided to manufacture the ultimate racing frame. Along with Ferrari and Campagnolo the design was perfected and production went into effect. Sadly, only several dozen were ever made. It was just too expensive to manufacture, in 1991 these frames sold for $3500. All the Cinetica frames used Campagnolo dropouts stamped: Cinetica. As for the paint, that was provided by Ferrari along with its carbon expertise.

You will not find much info on the internet about Cinetica, it was way WAY ahead of its time. One claim to fame for this frame is the fact that it was used as a prop in 1991 in Terminator 2, Judgement Day, 1991 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger...look it up see for yourself.

Why is this frame so rare, it started it all...while everybody was messing with aluminum, Andrea Cinelli had a vision to use carbon fiber. To the best of my knowledge, I know of only 4 of these frames on the planet as of this day. In the late 1980's there were a few companies who exprimented w/ carbon ...won't mention names...why ruffle feathers, the end result was failure. Cinetica was 20 years ahead of its time.

Used keirin frames can sell for top dollar on eBay and the internet at large. At least if they're in good condition, that is no rust, no dings, no dents, no stripped threads, no bent forks, the frame is aligned, decent paint, etc. NJS Export prices a "near mint" frame at around $1800

and a fucked up frame for about $300.

So I was dismayed when I saw this super fucked up Nagasawa on eBay with a current bid of $540. The head tube looks like its about to fall off and the top tube looks like someone took an axe to it.

Firing off at fixed-gears.
I'm all for the current bicycle renaissance in San Francisco. As the Indian summer heats up, you'll notice the bike lanes will be nose to tail with bikers — like a line of baby elephants. This is a good thing. Maybe the notoriously free-form, Tijuana driving style of SF residents will ease up a notch and they'll return to mowing down pedestrians exclusively. There's safety in numbers.
Of course, every revolution has its drawbacks. There's always going to be that crew that wants to convince the world they're that much more revolutionary, devoted, and pure than everyone else. And as the rubber hits the roads in San Francisco, a clan of tight-trousered, mullet-headed, vintage-T-shirt-clad Robespierres has coalesced around the fixed-gear bicycle, or as it's called in its proponents' cutesy parlance, the "fixie."
What's a fixed-gear? Imagine yourself cruising down the street on your bike. You get tired and so you stop pedaling and coast. The freewheel mechanism in your hub disengages the drive train and lets the back wheel continue to spin while the cranks and pedals are still. On a fixed-gear the rear cog is bolted directly to the hub. There is no freewheel or cassette mechanism, so if the hub is moving, the cog is moving. Which means if the chain is moving, the pedals are moving, and if the bike is moving, you're pedaling. There is no coasting.
Sounds like a pain in the ass. If you're like me, the first question that comes to mind is "why?" Well, the modern SF two-wheeled steel, aluminum, and rubber hipster fashion accessory has its roots in racing, like other wheeled vehicles that don't really translate to street usage. They were — and still are — used on banked, velodrome-style tracks during races that employ all manner of strategies, including slowing down to a stop or near stop and doing a "track stand" — balancing at a standstill without putting your feet down — so your opponent can pass you and you can ride in the draft.
Since you're not likely to be drafting anyone on city streets, a track bike is a highly impractical choice of wheels. What’s more impractical is that fixed-gears often appear to lack brakes. The bike's speed is controlled by the rider's pedaling cadence — slow the pedaling, you slow the bike. Stop pedaling, stop the bike. This effect can be augmented by adding a front caliper brake, but that's frowned upon by fixie fashionistas who do things like cut their handlebars down to a foot and don't run bar tape or grips. The problem with using pedal cadence as a braking mechanism is that stopping is dependent on rider skill.
Now there's the rub. Like trucker hats and PBR, what started as a bike messenger thing has become a fashion statement and status symbol. You've got kids in the Mission with the left leg of their jeans rolled up, a little biker hat on crooked, slip-on Vans, and a brand-new fixed-gear Bianchi; and they don't know their ass from a light socket. Cadence? You may as well be talking astrophysics. They just know that it looks cool. It looks less cool, however, when one of these lemmings comes screaming down the Haight Street hill unable to keep up with the speed of the pedals and wrecks in the middle of Divisadero. A friend was riding down Stanyan with a box in his hand when some goon on a fixed-gear, unable to slow down, ran into his back wheel and crashed him in the middle of the street. He didn't even stop to see if my friend was OK.
So what was the original draw that caused the person I'll call "Biker Zero" — to crib epidemiological lingo — to ride a track bike on the street? The people I know who ride them talk about being at one with the bike, feeling part of it, in the bike instead of on the bike. I'll go with that. But this human-bike-cyborg crap has reached the level of "I like the East Coast because I like to see the seasons change" tripe. Respect to the old-school heads who've been riding them since way back, but as someone who's done way gnarlier things on wheels, it's just not all that impressive. The Bicycle Film Festival had scheduled a screening of M.A.S.H., an unfinished fixed-gear documentary by Mike Martin and Gabe Morford, until it got pulled at the last minute. It was shot here in San Francisco and showcased the "skills and beauty of these riders." Beauty, no doubt — as in perfect hair. So you can ride down a hill and lift up your back wheel and do little skids to slow down. So what?
Riding a fixed-gear is like handicapping yourself. The bikes are so awkward to ride that not looking like an idiot while riding one is an accomplishment. It's like riding a three-legged horse in the Kentucky Derby. To do that well, you'd have to be an excellent jockey. At the same time, why not be in it to win it and ride a horse with four legs? To me, it takes the choices — and therefore some creativity — out of riding. I don't ride a fixed-gear for the same reason I won't drive an automatic: no car is telling me when to shift, and no bike is going to tell me when I can pedal. If you've got bike skills, why not take them to a higher level? Go home and search for "Steven Hamilton" or "World Cup Downhill" on YouTube and see what can really be done on a bike that has the capabilities to be pushed. (There is a whole European tradition of flatland tricks on fixed-gears that takes serious skills, but it doesn't seem to be a part of the current SF scenester fixie explosion.)
Not everyone is riding a bike to push limits. Still, the fixie cabal sticks in my craw, and it's not because I'm unimpressed with the virtuosity. It's not the misuse of a track-racing bike on city streets that bugs me. BMX bikes came about through the misuse of Schwinn Stingrays in dirt lots, and mountain bikes were the result of chopped-up road bikes on dirt. Misuse can mean progress. What kills me is the sinking feeling I get when I ride down Valencia and think, "Does anyone in this town ever do anything original?"
Now there's even fixed-gear graffiti, Krylon line art of single-speed bikes with bullhorn handlebars, and the dubious slogan of "gears are for queers." The fact of the matter is, the popularity of these bikes has nothing to do with the bikes themselves or the few people who actually have the chops to ride them with style. The fixed-gear is to 2006 what the Razor scooter was to 1996: a wheeled freak show for wannabes. Test it: send the right guy with the right clothes and the right haircut out around town on one of those old-timey bikes with the enormous front wheel with the cranks mounted directly to it like a tricycle. You know, the ones you need a ladder to get on and off of. Just see how many giant-wheeled ladder bikes are locked up in front of Ritual Coffee Roasters next week.
Do what makes you happy, but also do some soul-searching, champ: does riding a fixed-gear make you happy or does fitting in make you happy? Ask yourself, what bike was I riding last year? Was I riding one at all?

Maybe its time to stop. Haven't you all blown your knees out by now?

If you live anywhere near the east coast, you are probably familiar with and are probably going to the North American Handjob Show this weekend. Framebuilders from around the country and the world are going to be there showing off their goods. Colorado seems to be well represented, with Mosiac, Black Sheep, Moots, Yipsan, and maybe a couple others going, but it seems like some of the more well known Colorado builders like Nobilette, Rene Herse, Zinn, Yamaguchi, and Gangl are absent.

Volume Thrasher

If any of you follow fixed-freestyle blogs or forums you have probably heard about the Volume Thrasher.
The Thrasher is Volumes new prototype trick frame which will probably replace their current trick frame, the Cutter. If you own a Cutter, you are probably pissed off by the fact that a new generation comes out every couple months, its currently in generation 5. You could say that Volume fixed frames have a pretty short "product life cycle."

Anyways, back to the Trasher. It looks like the Trasher is slated to be the end-all trick frame from Volume. The frame is being tested by riders Fonseca, Puckett, Mosher and Congo, some of the big names in fixed freestyle right now. Some of the major differences between this and the cutter:
More tire clearance - fatter tires, go bigger
Seat tube cutout for a shorter wheelbase - better wheelies
Mid bottom bracket - stronger
Longer top tube - no barspin toe overlap

I think this is super big, and other companies will probably soon follow suit. Not only does this allow for more spins to be thrown in combos, it nullifies some of the previous arguments about toe overlap with 650/26" vs 700c front wheels in FGFS. So we'll probably see fewer and fewer 26" front wheels used for tricks in the future.

Bootleg B43s

In the world of fixed gear components, there are a few levels of quality. Top tier components are those which were designed for professional track racing, for example Sugino 75 cranks. Below those are components which could be used for track racing, but are more than likely to end up on a high end tarckx bike, for example red anodized Sugino 75 cranks. And below those are components which are brightly colored, not intended for track racing, are 100% likely to end up on someones color coded tarckx bike, like anodized All City/Messenger/Origin8/Soma/Iro/Bulletproof/Eightinch cranks.
These are usually the same Taiwanese crap with different branding, if you look at some of these the only difference is the brand stamp on them.

Bottom level components usually work fine, sure your cog or chainring is shaped more like an oval than a circle, or the threads on your hubs or cranks strips whatever you put on there, or your chain snaps when you're pedaling downhill, but the point is they're functional. The people who buy them generally care more that they're colored antifreeze green than the fact that what they're riding is poor quality.

Generally, these are imitation products. A few years back, the rim to have was the Velocity deep V. A number of months later, Weinmann DP18s came out in full force in all colors of the rainbow.
Imitation products sort of de-value the original brand, especially if they become more widely distributed. Again, why spend $75 on a Velocity Deep V rim when you could get a complete Weinmann DP18 wheel for that amount? Things like weight and quality control don't concern most people who buy these things. For most of them, a color coordinated "fixie" is their first bike. And for a lot of boutique type track bike shops, this is where a lot of money is made.

Anyways

If any of you ever check Denver Craigslist, you are well aware of the guy that has a bike shop of some sort and tries to sell products from it through online free classifieds. (This is prohibited, you should flag his posts) It was through this guy, however, that I learned of the existence of knockoff B43s. The Weinmann DP41.

Lets not talk about how the B43 came out after the H+Son Formation Face, the two are distinctly different (besides H+Son wasn't the first 4cm deep rim, think Gipiemme Tecnos and Campagnolo Shamals), but instead think about how this guy, selling shitty Taiwanese components and promoting his shop through free online classifieds instead of traditional advertising hurts more legit Denver bike shops like Track Shack. Its kinda sleazy. Especially when you write things like "I CAN TAKE CREDIT CARDS" in your ad.

But hell, if you don't care about quality or any of the associated benefits, and want 4cm deep rims, go for it.

This same person has been trying to sell his CONVERSION on boulder craigslist for at least a year, I think originally he had it listed for 2200 $ then 1800$ now 1500 $. When will this guy figure out that his bike isnt worth even have of what hes asking ! Not to mention the fact he never lists out what is actually on the bike, just the fact that it was built up by 'Chris Zias' ooooh now im impressed. Even if i bought everything on that bike new it would still cost me less than 1500$

Toby: Oh, I was thinking of getting a bike, too. But then there’s all those bike kids around all the time, like, talking about vintage frames and shit. It’s just become too much of a scene.

Jane: Oh, well. I just thought it would be easier than taking the bus, but I can see what you mean. Do you go to a lot of shows around here? Where’s good to go?

Toby: I used to go to shows more, but then it started to seem like people were going to concerts to be cool, not because they actually like the band. It’s too much of a fucking scene.

Jane: Oh, OK. I get that. I feel like that at shows sometimes. But, you know, I like seeing bands live sometimes… So what do you do for fun?

Toby: I mostly just spend a lot of time by myself…

Jane: Ah.

Toby: But that whole loner thing is starting to become too much a scene.

The FUNctional side of Fixed Gears and Winter Riding

Winter has been relatively easy for Boulderites this season as far as snow is concerned, but that doesn't mean we won't be seeing some possibly huge snowstorms in the coming months and the one thing I can whole heartedly recommend for anyone who has to venture out is to buy a set of full fenders. The Planet Bike Hardcore Hybrid fenders(shown below on my Crosscheck) are the most readily available from local bike shops and for those who don't have massive tire clearance and fender mounts, the Planet Bike SpeedyEZ clip-on fenders provide plenty of coverage for even the most aggressive track frames. Planet Bike has been in the game for some time and offers something that will fit any frame style or tire size(recumbent to 29er) with costs being relatively cheap at $40 to $50. A small price to pay for staying dry(and clean).

For those who have the clearance and fender mounts, the Honjo-Koken and Honjo copy Velo Orange fenders are the weapons of choice. A little more costly, but Honjo's are custom made and fit to your frame and with supplied stainless steel mounting hardware, your bike will probably quit before they do. The aluminum and stainless steel main body construction is a bonus too because they can be bent and straightened back to normal after a collision, fall, bike rack mishap, etcetera whereas plastic will most likely snap depending on the severity of the bend. I put a crease in a front PB fender when my front wheel low sided into a curb and it cracked before I could get it halfway back. The Honjo's and Velo Orange's can also have hammered, matte, or polished finishes that compliment a different style of bike much nicer than flat black. The Velo Orange fenders also have a price point on par with Planet Bike so I find it really hard to not get a pair of those. I'll be using some VO fenders in the near future and the only reason I don't have them already is I haven't put the order in; I'm waiting to go home to Annapolis and pick up a pair in person. While I'm waiting, my current fenders are working great and will finish this season strong.

Bottom line, get a pair of fenders and once you ride the bike lane with that dirty, wet, sloppy snow you'll wonder how you ever rode before.

John Breaux Lives On

John Breaux is a cyclist who was hit and killed last year in Louisville. The woman who killed him was sentenced to 16 years of probation, 200 hours of community service, and is not allowed to drive anymore. Since I've been hit multiple times I don't want to digress into a rant about drivers who kill cyclists, but I will say this is a great example of why senior citizens shouldn't be allowed to drive.

More importantly, the city of Louisville loved this man so much that they erected a bronze statue of him downtown.

Alleycat in D-town Next Friday

The Track Shack, Denver's favorite track bike shop, is hosting an alleycat next Friday. The Specifics:

We're gonna have one. A classic alleycat. Come to the Track Shack on February 12th at 5 o'clock post meridien, hand me 5 dollars, and you'll receive a manifest (list) with checkpoints (addresses) on it. You may complete these checkpoints in any order you wish. The first person to complete all of the checkpoints and make it back to the Shack will get all of the entry money. Everyone else won't get a goddamn thing. More racers, more money. If you're faster than everyone you know, tell your friends to come, and try to take their money. Afterwards, maybe we'll barbeque?

I know I'll be there. Lets hope it isn't snowing.

Hella Rare Campy Pista Cranks

Thought I scored some pretty rare shit when I copped these 151bcd Nuovo Record Pista cranks awhile back. I was under the impression that besides Campy skip tooth cranksets and rare early parts, 151 NR Pista were among the rarest.

Then I spotted these the other day, Campagnolo track cranks that are drilled to accept both 144 & 151bcd chainrings.

I'm guessing these were made when Campagnolo was switching over to 144bcd from 151 and were unsure of which standard would stick?
I thought those were pretty rare, and then I saw something I'd never even heard of in Prolly's Flickr.

Non-fluted Super Record Pista cranks with the Campy Shield on them. I guess these were sitting in some dark dungeon in the back Ben's Cycle and Prolly snapped a pic when he went to visit. Hot Damn.

Mosaic Cycles

So we talk alot about italian and japanese builders who make great frames, but here in boulder we are lucky to have some really quality builders. Today im gonna talk about Mosaic Cycles. Started by Aaron Barcheck and Nick Phillips in 2009.

I was over at their shop the other day dropping off The Ocean to get a tube replaced, and he was kind enough to show me some of his recent work. I should have taken some pics, he had some seriously sweet Ti frames. Aaron says that his specialty is TIG welding, but his lug work was impeccable. He was showing me a road frame made from Stainless steel, lugged everything, it had a sweet aero seatstay with hand carved lugs.

Everything he was doing was of the highest quality, best tubes, best lugs, and best paint (spectrum). Right now he is extremely busy getting ready for the NAHBS, and I cant wait to see what hes got in store for the show. So when you peeping the NAHBS coverage keep your eye out for Mosaic Cycles.

Coastless is Ross, Casey & Matt. They started Coastless a few months back to make fixed gear inspired clothing here in Boulder. Ross and Casey were a tremendous help in organizing the event last night and we couldn't have done it without them. Casey, who does most of the design work for Coastless, gave away some really nice one-off prints and shirts he made for the event last night. Casey also designed the flyer for the event, which is pretty big, gotta give props.

Snarfs Sandwiches

Snarfs is a sandwich shop with 6 locations in Boulder and Denver. Their sandwiches are amazing, I'll eat a veggie snarf any day of the week. Also, they are a zero waste business -- they compost or recycle everything, no trash!

Satellite Boardshop

Satellite is THE skate & snow shop in Boulder, they're also one of four Snowboard Magazine Supershops. Satellite also carries the coveted & limited Vans Syndicate lines. Buy your sneakers here or at Installation Shoe Gallery

Installation is one of a kind. They sell sick shoes, headphones, sunglasses, hats and streetwear. They carry brands like The Hundreds, ALIFE, Nike SB, and Supra that are otherwise hard to find in town. This is THE sneaker freaker store in Boulder.

Ace Metric

Ace Metric is a track/tarckx bike shop in Florida. We got set up with some bike parts from these guys through our friend Nick, who recently moved out here from Orlando. Unfortunately, the package didn't arrive quite on time so well have to get parts out to Trick Comp winners later this week.

DVLP Clothing

DVLP clothing is a streetwear company based out of Denver. I like their clothes a lot, they don't just make t-shirts either. They've got sweatshirts, jackets, denim, shorts -- all sorts of styles. Noah, one of the partners of the company, contributes a lot to the Denver bike community through sponsoring events like this and hosting the pre-loops meetup every week at his coffee shop Crema Coffee

Crema Coffee is a sweet new coffee shop in Denver, located in the 5 points neighborhood at 29th and Larimer. The space is really well designed, its a garage that was transformed into a coffee shop. Loops, a Tuesday night bike ride, meets there beforehand. Also, the coffee and juices are delicious.

Buffalo Exchange

Buffalo Exchange is a new & used clothing store. You can go there to sell clothes if you need cash, or to buy clothes if you want some new ones. The Boulder location has recently had a lot of good stuff come through. Also, if you're interested, they sell SE and PK Ripper bikes at pretty good prices.

Our host, Boulder Indoor Cycling

The upstairs section of this short, quick, steep, wooden velodrome was where we showed the Revival. Part of the indoor trials/mountain bike course was where we had the trick competition. Steven, the cycling manager, was really good to us and we hope to have more bike events here in the future.

Fake Diamonds Clothing

Last but certainly not least, Fake Diamonds. Fake Diamonds is a clothing company run out of Boulder by Dillon Morton. They have a good selection and a pretty unique style. Dillon also DJed for us and threw it down hard at that. Check out their clothes, those sweaters are the bees knees.

Sorry about the lack of posts for the past few days, been working on finishing up this project.

This Saturday we'll be co-hosting the Boulder Premiere of The Revival at Boulder Indoor Cycling, the film will be shown at 9pm. If you haven't yet seen the trailer, or have seen it and want to see it again, here it is:

We'll be hosting a trick competition beforehand, which we'll meet at 7:30pm for. I've just received word that we will have access to Boulder Indoor Cycling's indoor mountain bike track/obstacles for the competition!

In addition to "best trick" there will be a game of Beer pickup, a wheelie contest, a fakie-riding contest, footdown and possibly bracketed street sprints. The winners of the individual events will receive prizes and the overall winner(person who did best in the most events) will get a super sick prize package. I'm sorry to everyone who wanted to ride the track but we couldn't afford to rent the track for pre-movie racing.

We've also got door prizes for those of you who don't want to do tricks or have fun on your bike.
